     Choose Your Perfect Pillow

Let me tell you, a cotton pillow can feel comfortable and be hypoallergenic.  It may come in cheap in price and feel just fine in the store.  Yet a couple months later you realize just how quickly that pillow flattened out and became not so perfect anymore.

That perfect wool pillow will also be hypoallergenic and even yields off the dust mites.  Not to mention, it will last longer than a cotton pillow.  However, the average person may find a wool pillow to be quite hard and uncomfortable.

Some think a foam pillow will provide just the right amount of firmness and be the perfect pillow.  Think again.  A foam pillow will be hot and leave your head sweating each night.  You wonder where that odor is starting to come from and then realize that your “perfect pillow” has now soaked up all the odors from your head.  Not too pleasant.  Think that’s bad, wait until you realize foam pillows are the most likely to attract dust mites.

Latex pillows may be comfortable and may provide a better contour to your neck and head.  They’ll ward off the dust mites.  However, if you’re the “pillow scruncher” in the family, this pillow is not for you.  It is too firm and cannot be scrunched, shaped, or fluffed the way other pillows may be.

Synthetic down pillows appear to be ideal.  They are thick, plush, and great for the pillow scruncher.  There’s nothing better than laying your head on a soft, plush pillow or scrunching it just the way you like after a long hard day filled with your usual routine.  “Down pillows, I’ve heard about those,” you think to yourself.  Down comforters are great, why not a down pillow?  Well keep in mind that synthetic down is a long way off from real down or particularly from real goose down.  The old saying, “You get what you pay for,” comes in true in this case.  It may be comfortable but it will not last nearly as long as a real down pillow.  You’ll find yourself back in that pillow department at the end of each year once again searching for the perfect pillow.

Down pillows are plush, easily scrunched to your liking, and can last up to 10 years.  This perfect pillow is soft, yet thick enough to give me support and is even hypoallergenic.  The thought that many people are allergic to down is simply because they purchase the cheaper pillows that have not been put through the correct cleaning process.  A quality down pillow is one in which the down has been put through a cleaning process which removes the allergens and leaves you with a hypoallergenic pillow that feels great and lasts long.  Yes, it may come in more expensive but isn’t your sleep worth it?  The way you sleep affects your entire day and determines how productive you are.  You return to that bed each night for a good night’s sleep and certainly hope to have the perfect pillow.  Wouldn’t it be nice to buy a pillow just once and not find yourself back in the department store a year or even five years later?  Be sure to check the fill power number for the pillow.  If the number is below 550, don’t bother.  You’re not trying a quality down pillow and it won’t live up to your expectations.  Look for those pillows that are a 600 – 800+ fill power.  The higher the fill power number, the more the pillow can loft.  By lofting, I mean the pillow allows air into it which makes the pillow plush and breathable.  It will not make you hot and will not trap odors.  It’ll last you many years to come and, with the right mattress and comforter, will leave you feeling refreshed each morning.  Now, you’ve finally found that “perfect pillow.”
